DTH Drilling Tools | Down the Hole Drilling Equipment | MSD

MSD (Zhuzhou Jingde Machinery Co., Ltd.) is a China-based rock drilling tools manufacturer with 23+ years of experience. We produce a complete range of DTH drilling tools — hammers, bits, and drill pipes — covering hole diameters from 90 mm to 1000 mm for mining, quarrying, water well, and construction applications.

What Is DTH Drilling?

DTH (down the hole) drilling is a percussion drilling method where the hammer operates at the bottom of the hole, directly behind the drill bit. Compressed air drives an internal piston that strikes the bit at high frequency, delivering impact energy directly to the rock face.

Unlike top hammer drilling where energy must travel through the drill string, DTH drilling transfers 100% of impact energy to the bit regardless of hole depth. This makes DTH the preferred method for deep holes exceeding 15–20 meters, large diameters above 100 mm, straight holes requiring minimal deviation, and hard rock formations where top hammer efficiency drops significantly.

DTH drilling is the industry standard for production blast holes in mining and quarrying, water well drilling, foundation piling, and large-diameter construction applications.

MSD DTH Drilling Tool Product Lines

DTH Hammers — The heart of the DTH system. MSD hammers feature valveless piston design that eliminates the most common failure point in conventional hammers. Available in DHD, QL, SD, MISSION, COP, and NUMA series from 3.5" to 24", operating at 1.0–3.0 MPa air pressure.

DTH Bits — The cutting tool that breaks rock. MSD bits feature premium YK05 grade tungsten carbide buttons with two-stage heat treatment, achieving sub-1% comprehensive failure rate. Available in flat face, concave, and convex designs for soft, medium, and hard rock formations. Diameter range: 90–1000 mm.

DTH Drill Pipes — The connection between rig and hammer. MSD drill pipes feature friction welded tool joints for maximum fatigue resistance. Available in 76–178 mm OD with API REG and NC thread connections. Large-diameter air passages ensure efficient flushing at depth.

DTH System Selection

Selecting the right DTH system starts with hole diameter. For small holes in the 90–135 mm range, choose DHD3.5, DHD340, QL40, or SD4 hammers paired with flat or concave face bits and 76–89 mm drill pipes. These configurations suit small water wells, anchor drilling, and geotechnical investigation.

For medium holes in the 135–190 mm range, DHD350, QL50, SD5, and MISSION50 hammers work with concave or convex bits and 89–102 mm pipes. This covers most quarry bench drilling and medium water well applications.

Production drilling in the 155–254 mm range requires DHD360, QL60, SD6, QL80, or SD8 hammers with matching bits and 114–146 mm pipes. These systems dominate mining blast holes and large-diameter water wells.

For large-diameter applications from 254–445 mm, SD10, DHD1120, SD12, and N125 hammers handle deep foundation piling and infrastructure projects with 152–178 mm pipes.

The largest applications from 457–1000 mm use QL200, N180, and N240 hammers for major infrastructure, bridge foundations, and shaft sinking.

Rule of Thumb: For most applications, match hammer model number to bit diameter in inches — QL60 with 6" (152 mm) bits, SD8 with 8" (203 mm) bits. Verify shank compatibility across all components before ordering.

Why Choose MSD DTH Drilling Tools?

Valveless Hammer Design — Eliminates the #1 failure point in conventional DTH hammers. No valve to fail means fewer breakdowns, less maintenance, and longer service life. In contaminated drilling conditions, MSD valveless hammers outlast valve-type competitors by 30–50%.

Premium Tungsten Carbide Bits — YK05 grade buttons with two-stage heat treatment achieve sub-0.1% comprehensive failure rate. Gauge button breakage below 0.5%, button fallout below 0.5%.

Friction Welded Drill Pipes — Computer-controlled friction welding creates weld zones stronger than the parent metal. Zero weld-point failures in deep-hole drilling applications.

Complete System Compatibility — All MSD DTH components are designed to work together. Hammer threads match pipe threads match bit threads — one supplier for your entire DTH system.

Wide Pressure Range — MSD hammers operate reliably from 1.0 to 3.0 MPa, accommodating any compressor capacity from small portable units to high-pressure production rigs.

Full Size Coverage — From 90 mm water well bits to 1000 mm infrastructure hammers, MSD covers every DTH application.

Applications

Mining — Production blast holes for open-pit and underground operations. MSD SD and QL series hammers with convex face bits deliver aggressive penetration in hard rock formations.

Quarrying — Bench drilling for aggregate and dimension stone production. MSD DHD and MISSION series provide versatile pressure compatibility for varied compressor fleets.

Water Well — Domestic, agricultural, and municipal water supply drilling. MSD complete systems include casing-compatible configurations for unstable overburden formations.

Construction — Foundation piling, anchor drilling, and geotechnical investigation. MSD large-diameter systems from 254 mm to 1000 mm serve bridge foundations and major infrastructure projects.

Quality Assurance

Every MSD DTH drilling tool is manufactured under ISO 9001 certified quality management. Hammers are pressure tested at 120% rated maximum before shipment. Bits undergo hardness testing, dimensional inspection, and button retention verification. Pipes are weld integrity tested and thread gauge verified.

MSD DTH drilling tools are trusted by 1000+ drilling contractors in 40+ countries. Our engineering team provides technical support for system selection, troubleshooting, and optimization.

faq & answer

Frequently Asked
Questions

A complete DTH (Down-the-Hole) system consists of three core components: the DTH Hammer, which provides the percussive force; the DTH Bit, which crushes the rock; and the DTH Drill Pipes, which transmit rotation and compressed air. A proper match between these components is critical for optimal performance.
You should choose DTH drilling for applications requiring deep holes (typically over 20 meters), large diameters (5 inches and above), or when drilling in hard rock formations (>200 MPa). DTH provides superior hole straightness and consistent energy at depth, where Top Hammer systems lose efficiency.
High-pressure (HP) DTH tools (18-25 bar) are designed for high-performance drilling in hard rock, offering faster penetration rates. Low-pressure (LP) tools (7-14 bar) are more economical and suitable for softer rock or applications where a high-capacity compressor is not available.
The selection process starts with your required hole diameter. This determines the DTH bit size. The DTH hammer is then chosen to match the bit's optimal operating range. For example, a 6-inch (152mm) hole typically requires a 6-inch class hammer like a DHD360 or QL60. Always consult the manufacturer's specification sheet for the best match.
