Top Hammer Drilling Tools: Complete Rock Drilling Solutions

MSD (Zhuzhou Jingde Machinery Co., Ltd.) is a China-based rock drilling tools manufacturer with 23+ years of experience. We produce a complete range of top hammer drilling tools — shank adapters, drill rods, button bits, and coupling sleeves — for tunneling, mining, quarrying, and construction applications.

What Is Top Hammer Drilling?

Top hammer drilling is a percussion drilling method where the rock drill (drifter) is mounted at the top of the drill string. The rock drill's piston strikes the shank adapter, and impact energy travels through the drill rods to the button bit at the hole bottom.

Top hammer drilling excels in shallow to medium depth holes (typically under 20 meters) and smaller diameters (28–127 mm). The system offers fast rod handling, quick bit changes, and lower equipment cost compared to DTH drilling. It is the preferred method for tunneling, underground development, bench drilling in quarries, rock bolting, and construction anchor holes.

The trade-off is energy loss through the drill string — as hole depth increases, less impact energy reaches the bit. For this reason, top hammer is most efficient in holes under 15–20 meters, while DTH becomes more efficient for deeper applications.

Shank Adapters — The critical link between rock drill and drill string. MSD shank adapters feature deep-case carburized splines (1.5–2.0 mm case depth, 58–62 HRC surface hardness) for maximum impact end life. Available in R28, R32, R38, T38, T45, T51, ST58, and MG60/MT60 threads. Compatible with Epiroc / Atlas Copco, Sandvik, Furukawa, Montabert, Ingersoll Rand, and Krupp rock drills.

Drill Rods — MSD manufactures both threaded and tapered rod systems. Threaded extension rods and MF rods feature computer-controlled friction welding that fuses hardened thread ends to tough rod bodies — the weld zone is stronger than the parent metal itself. Tapered hex rods use precision-machined 7°, 11°, and 12° tapers for friction-fit self-tightening connections.

Threaded Button Bits — MSD threaded button bits feature premium tungsten carbide inserts with two-stage heat treatment. Body breakage rate below 0.1%, insert breakage below 1%, insert fallout below 0.05%. Available in R32, R38, T38, T45, and T51 threads with ballistic, spherical, or conical button configurations. Diameter range: 38–127 mm.

Tapered Button Bits — For shallow-hole applications where fast bit changes matter most. The friction-fit self-tightening mechanism means the harder you hit, the tighter the bit grips. Quick bit changes by simple tapping — no rotation needed. Available in 7°, 11°, and 12° taper angles. Diameter range: 28–45 mm.

Coupling Sleeves — For connecting extension rods in longer drill strings. MSD coupling sleeves are precision-machined to match rod thread tolerances for perfect energy transfer.

Threaded vs Tapered Systems

Choosing between threaded and tapered systems depends on hole depth and diameter.

Threaded systems (R32, R38, T38, T45, T51) use screw connections that can be coupled to reach greater depths. They are the standard choice for holes exceeding 5 meters and diameters above 45 mm. Threaded systems dominate tunneling, mining bench drilling, and production quarrying where multiple rods must be joined.

Tapered systems (7°, 11°, 12°) use friction-fit connections without threads. The bit simply slides onto the tapered rod tip and self-tightens under impact. Tapered systems excel in shallow holes under 5 meters where fast bit changes and maximum energy transfer matter most. They are preferred for secondary breaking, small quarry production, construction anchor holes, and handheld rock drill applications.

Rule of Thumb: Hole depth under 5 meters and diameter under 45 mm — choose tapered for fastest cycle times. Hole depth over 5 meters or diameter over 45 mm — choose threaded for reliable deep-hole performance.

Why Choose MSD Top Hammer Tools?

Carburized Shank Adapters — Deep-case carburizing on the spline end delivers superior impact life. The hardened surface withstands millions of percussion cycles without mushrooming, while the tough core resists fatigue cracking.

Friction Welded Rods — Computer-controlled friction welding joins hardened threaded ends to tough rod bodies at the molecular level. The weld zone is stronger than the parent metal itself, eliminating weld-point failures in demanding applications.

Premium Tungsten Carbide Bits — Two-stage heat treatment achieves exceptional insert retention and wear resistance. Sub-1% comprehensive failure rate across thousands of bits in field service.

Precision Taper Machining — MSD machines tapered tips and sockets with micro-level tolerance to ensure 100% surface contact. Bits lock instantly to prevent down-hole loss, yet detach easily with a simple tap.

Complete Thread Range — R28, R32, R38, T38, T45, T51, ST58, MG60/MT60 threads in stock. Full compatibility with all major rock drill brands.

Full Brand Compatibility — MSD replacement shank adapters fit Epiroc / Atlas Copco, Sandvik, Furukawa, Montabert, Ingersoll Rand, and Krupp rock drills. Drop-in replacement guaranteed.

Applications

Tunneling — Development headings and production rounds. MSD T38 and T45 systems with drifter rods and drop center bits for underground excavation.

Mining — Bench drilling and stope drilling. MSD T45 and T51 systems for production holes in hard rock operations.

Quarrying — Bench drilling for aggregate and dimension stone. MSD threaded button bits with retrac design for reduced stuck drill string incidents.

Construction — Rock bolting, anchor drilling, and foundation preparation. MSD tapered systems for fast shallow-hole production.

Quality Assurance

Every MSD top hammer tool is manufactured under ISO 9001 certified quality management. Shank adapters undergo hardness testing, dimensional inspection, and spline gauge verification. Drill rods are weld integrity tested. Button bits receive insert retention inspection and gauge verification.

MSD top hammer drilling tools are trusted by 500+ drilling contractors in 40+ countries. Our engineering team provides technical support for system selection and compatibility verification.

faq & answer

Frequently Asked
Questions

A complete DTH (Down-the-Hole) system consists of three core components: the DTH Hammer, which provides the percussive force; the DTH Bit, which crushes the rock; and the DTH Drill Pipes, which transmit rotation and compressed air. A proper match between these components is critical for optimal performance.
You should choose DTH drilling for applications requiring deep holes (typically over 20 meters), large diameters (5 inches and above), or when drilling in hard rock formations (>200 MPa). DTH provides superior hole straightness and consistent energy at depth, where Top Hammer systems lose efficiency.
High-pressure (HP) DTH tools (18-25 bar) are designed for high-performance drilling in hard rock, offering faster penetration rates. Low-pressure (LP) tools (7-14 bar) are more economical and suitable for softer rock or applications where a high-capacity compressor is not available.
The selection process starts with your required hole diameter. This determines the DTH bit size. The DTH hammer is then chosen to match the bit's optimal operating range. For example, a 6-inch (152mm) hole typically requires a 6-inch class hammer like a DHD360 or QL60. Always consult the manufacturer's specification sheet for the best match.
