What Is a Threaded Button Bit?

A threaded button bit is a top hammer rock drilling bit that connects to a compatible drill rod through a machined thread. The threaded connection allows the bit to work as part of an extension drilling system with drill rods, coupling sleeves, and a matching shank adapter.

The correct thread button bit cannot be selected by diameter alone. The thread must first match the existing drill rod or complete drilling system, while the bit diameter, face design, button arrangement, and body type should be confirmed according to the drill rig and working conditions.


Available Thread Systems

R32 Threaded Button Bits: Available for selected smaller-diameter top hammer drilling requirements. Confirm the existing R32 drill rod, required bit diameter, and current bit configuration before ordering.

T38 Threaded Button Bits: Available in multiple diameters and Normal or Retrac configurations for applications such as bench drilling, quarry production, and underground drilling.

T45 Threaded Button Bits: Available with selected Flat Face, Drop Center, Normal, and Retrac configurations for medium- to larger-diameter top hammer drilling.

T51 Threaded Button Bits: Available in selected diameters and button layouts for larger top hammer drilling systems. The thread and bit dimensions must be matched with the existing T51 drill string.

ST58, ST60, and ST68 Threaded Button Bits: Available for selected heavy-duty top hammer systems. Exact diameters and configurations vary by thread and model.


Normal and Retrac Button Bits

Normal Button Bits: Normal body designs are commonly used where the borehole remains relatively stable and the selected skirt, face design, and flushing arrangement match the drilling conditions.

Retrac Button Bits: Retrac button bits use an extended skirt and rear cutting features. They are commonly considered for fractured, fissured, or unstable formations where additional guidance and easier retraction may be required.

Normal and Retrac designs are not interchangeable solely by diameter. Confirm the thread, drill rod, hole condition, rock formation, hole depth, and current drilling problem before selecting the body type.


Face Designs and Button Configurations

Flat Face: A general-purpose face option available across selected models. Suitability depends on the rock formation, abrasiveness, flushing requirements, and required hole quality.

Drop Center: Available for selected threaded button bits where the face profile and flushing arrangement match the required drilling conditions.

Button Configurations: Spherical, ballistic, and conical button options are available for selected models. Not every button shape, face design, and diameter is available for every thread system, so the final configuration must be confirmed against the parameter table and application.


Threaded Button Bit Applications

Mining: Threaded button bits are used in surface and underground drilling where the thread system, bit diameter, and drill string must match the drilling equipment.

Quarrying and Bench Drilling: T38, T45, T51, and selected ST thread systems are available for production and blast-hole drilling, subject to the required diameter and rig configuration.

Tunneling and Underground Development: R32 and other compatible thread systems can be selected for drifting, tunneling, and underground drilling according to the drill rig, rod system, hole depth, and rock formation.

Construction Drilling: Thread button bits can also be configured for selected rock excavation, anchoring, and construction blasting requirements.


Threaded vs Tapered Button Bits

Threaded button bits connect to threaded drill rods and are used as part of an extension drilling system. They are normally selected for compatible top hammer rigs where the drill string may include extension rods, MF rods, coupling sleeves, and a shank adapter.

Tapered button bits connect to tapered drill rods and are commonly used for shallow-hole drilling with compatible handheld or light drilling equipment. The two systems should not be selected only by a fixed diameter limit; the existing drill rig, drill rod connection, required hole depth, and application must be confirmed first.


How to Select the Correct Threaded Button Bit

1. Confirm the thread: Check the marking and thread type of the existing drill rod or current bit. R32, T38, T45, T51, ST58, ST60, and ST68 are different connection systems.

2. Confirm the required diameter: Match the bit diameter to the required hole size and the confirmed thread system.

3. Confirm the body type: Select Normal or Retrac according to borehole stability, fractured ground, retraction conditions, and the current drilling problem.

4. Confirm the face and button configuration: Select the face design, button shape, and button layout according to the rock formation, abrasiveness, flushing requirements, and required hole quality.
