APPLICATIONS
CASE STUDIES
MSD manufactures tapered button bits, also known as taper button bits, for compatible top hammer drilling systems. The confirmed product range covers 7°, 11°, and 12° taper connections with bit diameters from 32 to 51 mm.
Available configurations include Standard Skirt, Short Skirt, and Long Skirt designs with different gauge-button layouts, front-button layouts, flushing arrangements, weights, and part numbers. Exact availability varies by taper angle, diameter, and model.
A tapered button bit is a top hammer rock drilling bit that connects to a compatible tapered drill rod through a matching tapered socket. It is commonly used in shallow-hole drilling applications where the rock drill, tapered rod, taper angle, and bit diameter form a matched drilling system.
The taper angle must match the existing tapered drill rod. A bit with the required diameter is not necessarily compatible if its taper angle, socket dimensions, or rod connection is different.
7° Tapered Button Bits: The current range includes selected Standard Skirt and Long Skirt models. Confirmed diameters extend from 32 to 51 mm, depending on the skirt design and model.
11° Tapered Button Bits: The current range includes selected Short Skirt models with confirmed diameters from 32 to 41 mm.
12° Tapered Button Bits: The current range includes selected Short Skirt models with confirmed diameters from 32 to 41 mm.
Do not select a different taper angle only according to rock hardness. The taper angle must first match the existing tapered drill rod and drilling equipment.
Standard Skirt: Available for selected 7° taper button bit models. The final model should be confirmed according to the required diameter, rod connection, button layout, and flushing arrangement.
Short Skirt: Available for selected 11° and 12° taper button bits. Model availability varies according to the taper angle, diameter, and button configuration.
Long Skirt: Available for selected 7° taper button bits, including models within the larger confirmed diameter range shown in the product tables.
Skirt type should be confirmed against the current bit, tapered rod, drilling equipment, and working conditions rather than selected by diameter alone.
Confirm the taper angle: Check whether the existing tapered drill rod uses a 7°, 11°, or 12° connection.
Confirm the rod size: Check the dimensions or markings of the current tapered drill rod. The rod size and bit socket must be compatible.
Confirm the bit diameter: Select the required diameter only after the taper connection and rod size have been confirmed.
Check the current bit: Current bit markings, part numbers, dimensions, and clear photos can help confirm the replacement model.
Confirm the complete system: The rock drill or rig model, tapered rod, bit connection, and drilling application should be checked together before ordering.
Mining and Underground Development: Taper button bits are used with compatible tapered rod systems for selected development holes, support holes, secondary breaking, and other small-diameter drilling requirements.
Quarrying: Selected tapered button bit configurations are available for secondary rock breaking, small-diameter bench drilling, and related quarry drilling applications.
Tunneling: Tapered drilling systems can be used for selected tunnel support, roadway excavation, and underground construction drilling requirements.
Construction Drilling: Tapered button bits are also available for selected rock excavation, anchor-hole, and general construction drilling applications.
Final suitability depends on the rock drill, tapered rod connection, required diameter, hole depth, rock formation, and drilling conditions.
Tapered button bits connect to matching tapered drill rods and are commonly used where the existing rock drill and rod system use a tapered connection. The selected taper angle, rod size, and bit socket must match.
Threaded button bits connect to threaded drill rods and can form part of a threaded extension drilling system with drill rods, coupling sleeves or MF connections, and a matching shank adapter.
Do not choose between tapered and threaded button bits only according to a fixed diameter limit. Confirm the existing rod connection, drill rig or rock drill, required hole depth, bit diameter, and complete drill-string configuration first.
1. Check the rock drill or rig: Confirm the equipment model and the tapered rod system currently in use.
2. Confirm the taper angle: Identify whether the required connection is 7°, 11°, or 12°.
3. Confirm the rod size and socket: The tapered rod and bit socket must form a compatible connection.
4. Confirm the bit diameter: Match the required hole size with a confirmed model within the corresponding taper range.
5. Check the product configuration: Review the skirt type, gauge buttons, front buttons, flushing arrangement, weight, and part number shown in the parameter table.
6. Confirm the drilling conditions: Provide the rock formation, application, hole depth, and any current drilling or wear problem.
