Top Hammer Drill Rod Product Range

MSD manufactures rock drill rods for top hammer drilling systems used in mining, quarrying, tunneling, underground development, and construction drilling. The product range includes drifter rods, extension drill rods, MF drill rods, drill tubes, and tapered drill rods.

Available connections include R32, R38, T38, T45, T51, T60, ST58, and ST68, together with selected H22 and H25 tapered rod configurations. Rod lengths, body sizes, weights, connections, and part numbers vary by product type and model.

Extension Rods and MF Drill Rods

Extension drill rods normally use male threads at both ends. Matching coupling sleeves are used when connecting corresponding extension rod sections within the drill string.

MF drill rods, also called male-female drill rods, use a male connection at one end and a female connection at the other. This reduces the need for a separate coupling sleeve between corresponding MF rod sections.

MSD supplies selected T38, T45, T51, and T60 round MF drill rods, together with selected T38 and T51 extension rods. Each rod must match the shank adapter, adjacent rod connection, coupling arrangement, and button bit.

Drifter Rods, Drill Tubes, and Tapered Drill Rods

Drifter Rods: Selected hex-body drifter rods are available with R38 or T38 connections at the rock-drill end and R32 connections at the bit end.

Drill Tubes: Selected ST58 and ST68 round drill tubes are available. Exact lengths, body sizes, weights, and part numbers are shown in the product tables.

Tapered Drill Rods: Selected H22 and H25 tapered rods are available for compatible tapered button bits. The taper angle, rod dimensions, and bit socket must be confirmed before ordering.

How to Match Drill Rod Connections

Confirm the equipment: Check the rock drill or rig model and the existing shank adapter connection.

Confirm the rod type: Identify whether the required product is a drifter rod, extension rod, MF rod, drill tube, or tapered rod.

Confirm both ends: Record the complete thread or taper connection at both ends of the rod.

Check matching components: Confirm the coupling sleeve or MF connection and the button bit thread or taper.

Check the current rod: Product markings, dimensions, part numbers, and clear photos can help confirm the replacement model.

Applications and Drill Rod Selection

MSD top hammer drill rods are available for selected mining, quarrying, tunneling, underground development, and construction drilling systems. The suitable rod configuration depends on the equipment, connection system, rod length, button bit, hole depth, rock formation, and drilling application.

A similar rod diameter or thread name does not confirm complete compatibility. The drill rod, shank adapter, coupling connection, and button bit should be checked as one complete drilling system.

faq & answer

Frequently Asked
Questions

MSD supplies drifter rods, extension drill rods, MF drill rods, drill tubes, and tapered drill rods. Available connections include R32, R38, T38, T45, T51, T60, ST58, and ST68, together with selected H22 and H25 tapered rod configurations. Exact lengths, body sizes, weights, and connections vary by model.
Extension drill rods normally use male threads at both ends and matching coupling sleeves between rod sections. MF drill rods use a male connection at one end and a female connection at the other, reducing the need for a separate coupling sleeve between corresponding MF rod sections.
Confirm the rock drill or rig model, shank adapter connection, rod type, connection at both ends of the rod, coupling sleeve or MF connection, and button bit thread or taper. Current rod markings, dimensions, part numbers, and clear photos can also help confirm compatibility.
Choose a tapered drill rod when the existing rock drill and button bit use a compatible tapered connection. Choose a threaded drill rod when the drilling system uses matching R, T, or ST thread connections. The decision should be based on the existing equipment, rod connection, bit connection, required length, and drilling application.
Provide the rock drill or rig model, required rod type, thread or taper connection at both ends, rod length and body size, button bit connection and diameter, drilling application, current rod markings or photos, and required quantity. Include the current drilling problem if technical selection support is required.
